Help Choosing a Gift

If your admin has turned on Gift Suggestions, a Need ideas? button appears with the filters at the top of someone else’s list. With the setting off, which is the default, the button is not there and nothing else changes. The whole feature needs an AI provider; on a site without one it does not exist.

Press Need ideas? and a dialog asks one optional question: your budget. The occasion is taken from the list you are on (a Christmas list means Christmas, a birthday list a birthday, a plain wishlist counts as a birthday gift only when their birthday is within 60 days), so there is nothing else to fill in. Press Find Ideas and the AI writes five to eight gift ideas that are not on the person’s list.

  • Each idea says what to look for (the kind of thing, useful features, sensible variations), why it suits them based on what you can see of their lists, and a rough price band.
  • There are no product links. If your admin has set a search link, each idea gets a Search button that opens that page with the idea’s title filled in; otherwise where you shop is up to you.
  • Save to Gift Ideas adds the idea, with what to look for and why, to your private gift ideas for that person, creating that list the first time. From there it shows under Gift Ideas on their lists and can be turned into an off-list gift once you buy it. The person never sees your gift ideas.
  • Add as Off-List Gift puts it straight on the list as something you are giving. Other gifters see it the way they see any off-list gift; the person sees it only after the reveal. Only the title and what to look for go on it, never the AI’s reasoning about them.

The ideas you get are saved for you, so opening Need ideas? again for the same person shows the same answer at once, with a line such as “Ideas from 3 days ago, for Christmas, up to $50”, instead of asking the AI again. Press New Ideas to go back to the budget question and get a fresh set, which replaces the old one.

  • Only you can see your saved answer. The person never can, and other gifters each get their own.
  • Anything you saved or added is still marked when you come back.
  • Saved answers are cleared after a while (90 days unless your admin changes it) and whenever you ask again. What you did with an idea lives on as a gift idea or an off-list gift regardless.

Two small buttons on each idea tune future answers. Both can be undone from the same spot.

They have itThe person already owns this, or something just like it.Everyone who shops for that person: the idea, and near copies of it, stay out of all future answers for them. Nobody is shown who marked it.
Thumbs downNot something you would give them.Only you. Other gifters’ answers are not changed.

The person never sees either mark. Saving an idea is the positive signal: your saved ideas and past gifts tell the AI what kind of thing you think fits them.

The AI is not handed a score for each item. It is handed a short profile of the person in sections, strongest first, and told in plain words how much to lean on each one. The profile is capped at 60 lines and filled in this order, so what they want now is never crowded out by history.

On their lists nowItems on every list of theirs you can see, each tagged open or claimed, with price, priority, and category when known. Open items are listed before claimed ones. Up to 40.The strongest evidence of current taste. A claimed item shows taste too, but someone else is giving it, so never suggest it or a near copy.
Already hasGifts revealed on those lists in the last two years, each tagged “received” with the month, plus anything a gifter marked They have it, tagged “marked by a gifter”. Up to 30.Evidence of taste, but never suggest it or a near copy. A complement, an accessory, or the next step in that interest is good. Older gifts count less.
Your ideas and past giftsYour own gift ideas for them and the gifts you (or your partner) gave them. What you think fits this person: favour more of that kind without repeating it.
No longer on their listItems they marked unavailable, and items they removed after nobody gave them, in the last two years. Up to 15.The weakest hint. Do not suggest the same thing and do not read much else into it.
Your thumbs downIdeas you turned down.Off the table, including close variants.

Whatever the AI writes is then checked: anything that repeats an item on their lists, something they have, something you gave or saved, something you turned down, or that shares most of its words with one of those, is dropped before you see it. That check is a rule, not AI, and it also removes near duplicates within one answer.

The AI can see which section a line is in. It is not told which of their lists an item is on, who claimed or gave anything, or any numbers beyond prices. Priority reaches it as a word (“priority high”), and only when it is not normal.

To write sensible ideas, the model is shown the person’s first name; the items on their lists that you can already see (title, price, priority, category, and whether each is claimed); gifts they received on those lists in the last two years and items they removed or marked unavailable (titles and months only); your own gift ideas and past gifts for them; the They have it marks from any gifter and your own thumbs-downs; the occasion; and your budget if you gave one.

It is never shown who claimed or gave anything, what anyone paid, claim notes, item notes, links, or images, anything you cannot see yourself (a restricted viewer’s hidden items stay hidden here too), or last names, email addresses, and birth dates. The full, generated list is on the AI Provider page.

  • An admin turns it on under Admin > AI (Gift Suggestions). It is off by default.
  • Child accounts do not get the button. An adult can ask for ideas for a child’s list.
  • It never works on your own list: it is for shopping for someone else.
  • You can ask the AI up to ten times an hour. Reopening a saved answer does not count.

When Suggestions is on and enough of a list has been analysed, the dialog also opens with a one-line summary such as “Their list is mostly Sports & Outdoors, Clothing”. It comes from categories GiftWrapt already worked out for the items; nothing new is sent anywhere to show it.

A connected AI assistant planning a gift through get_gift_context receives the same picture: the person’s lists, your ideas and past gifts, what they already have (with whether each came from a revealed gift or a gifter’s mark), and what they no longer list. It never receives who gave or marked anything.
